The Trail to Everest
From Kathmandu at sea level, the team flies via two Twin Otter airplanes to the village of Lukla at 9200 ft. This is the gateway to the Himalaya and the starting off point for the expedition; it is also the team's first experience with high altitude. From here, they will attempt to trek 21 days and more than 30 miles to reach Mount Everest Base Camp at 17,500 ft. The team will travel on ancient trading routes still utilized by Nepalese, Tibetan, and Indian traders to transfer goods throughout the Himalayas. From this point on, the trails are rocky, steep and difficult to negotiate, and altitude will be one of their greatest challenges.
